11 days itinerary starting and ending in Cancun

Visit the southern part of Mexico in our Yucatan Chiapas tours and discover yourself a beautiful mix of nature and culture - from the lush jungle and pinturesque towns in Chiapas to one of the "new wonders of the world", Chichen Itza. Amaze yourself with the local people in San Cristobal de las Casas, trek the jungle in Palenque, swim in Agua Azul falls and take a boat ride in awe-inspiring Sumidero Canyon. All that topped with visits to Merida, Chichen Itza, Uxmal, Kohunlich, Tulum and Playa del Carmen.

Note: By virtue of the diversity of sites visited, this tour has longer travel times than our normal Mundo Maya tours that focus more time in just one region.

Day 1: Travel to Mexico Arrive at the airport in Cancun and meet your guide who will escort you throughout your journey. Transfer to Playa del Carmen and check into your hotel afterwards enjoy a walking tour of the 5th Ave. Overnight in Playa del Carmen.

Day 2: Tulum / Chetumal Early in the morning we depart to Tulum the famous Mayan harbour, perched atop of a cliff overlooking turquoise waters and pristine beaches. Afterwards we travel to Chetumal, where you will discover a very interesting Museum of Mayan culture; Check into your hotel in Chetumal.

Day 3: Kohunlich / Palenque Early in the morning, depart for Kohunlich ruins, famous for the enormous masks; continue to Palenque and check into your hotel and overnight.

Day 4: Palenque / Agua Azul falls / San Cristobal de las Casas Today we will have a guided visit of Palenque; this place is a striking testimony of the perfect balance between nature and architecture. In the afternoon the beauty of the waterfalls of Agua Azul awaits us for a refreshing swim. After swimming we'll be transferred to overnight in San Cristobal de las Casas.

Day 5: Sumidero Canyon / San Juan Chamula The visit of the dramatic Sumidero Canyon begins at the colonial town of Chiapa de Corzo. At the Canyon we will take a boat trip to find exotic birds and if we're lucky we will point out a couple of crocodiles. Then we will go to the indigenous village of San Juan Chamula and go back to San Cristobal de las Casas to spend the rest of the day. Overnight in San Cristobal de las Casas.

Day 6: San Cristobal de las Casas / Palenque We'll have a guided walking tour of San Cristobal during the morning. We'll visit the Main Plaza or Zocalo and walk along cobbled stone streets to find the Santo Domingo Church and the colorful indigenous markets. This charming city and its colonial buildings are of Mexico's favorites. After lunch we will board our coach to go back to Palenque for overnight.

Day 7: Palenque / Campeche This morning we travel to Campeche, visit the harbour of Campeche, a colonial gem of architecture and walk the ramparts of its mighty fortress. From the highest of San Miguel Fort, enjoy a beautiful view of the bay of Campeche. At night we will attend to the light show at the fort with a live presentation of the fight against the pirates. Overnight in Campeche.

Day 8: Kabah / Uxmal / Merida Today's journey takes us to Kabah, precious jewel of Mayan architecture and testimony of the magnificent of the Mayan culture. Also visit Uxmal, the trice build city, guided visit of both sites and then we continue to Merida, the capital of the Yucatan state. Check into your hotel. Overnight in Merida.

Day 9: Merida City Tour Early in the morning we'll get ready for our city tour of Merida, visiting the Governor's Palace, The Cathedral (the oldest one in America) the art room; continue stroll down the Paseo de Montejo's Blvd with its great mansions from last century. Continue to Progreso beach for a dip into the Golf of Mexico and relax. Return to Merida and free afternoon for shopping or explore the city on your own. Overnight in Merida.

Day 10: Chichen Itza We depart to Chichen Itza. This site is the most famous site in the Yucatan Peninsula and there you will see the fusion of different architectural styles which reflects the influences of the other classic cultures. On your way to Cancun, stop at the wonderful Cenote Ik-Kil, located in a cavern. Arrive to Cancun and check into your hotel. Free afternoon in Cancun.

Day 11: Cancun At schedule time, transfer to the airport for your homebound flight.

Mexico City and Yucatan Explorer
10 Days, starting in Mexico City and ending in Cancun

Discover two different regions of the country. Bustling Mexico City with a visit to the National Museum of Anthropology and the pyramids at Teotihuacan. The Yucatan and its underground rivers, Chichen Itza, Celestun National Park, and Playa del Carmen

Day 1: Arrive Mexico City Welcome to Mexico! Upon arrival in Mexico City we are met by our coach and tour guide and then transferred to our hotel.

Day 2: Mexico City This morning we will have a walking tour of the city which includes the Zocalo (or Plaza de la Constitucion), the main square of the city and the National Palace. We'll also visit the Templo Mayor archaeological site and museum, the Catedral Metropolitana and the Palace of Fine Arts. After lunch we will visit the National Museum of Anthropology, one of the finest anthropology museums in the world where we will learn about the ancient cultures of Mexico.

Day 3: Teotihuacan Before going to Teotihuacan today, we will visit Three Cultures Plaza in Tlatelolco; here is where the largest ancient market of Latin America was settled. Then a guided visit to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe. After that a short drive takes us to the ancient ruins and pyramids of Teotihuacan, City of the Gods. This is the most visited archaeological site in Mexico.

Day 4: Merida / Uxmal We take a morning flight to Merida and visit the archaeological ruins of Uxmal. Here a guide will introduce us to the Magician's Pyramid, the Governor's Palace, and the "Nunnery" Quadrangle. After our tour we continue on to the capital and main commercial city of Yucatan, Merida and have a guided tour.

Day 5: Cuzama Cenotes This morning we visit the Cenotes at Cuzama. The cenotes are sinkholes where underground rivers break through the limestone crust of the earth. For Mayas, they represent the doorway to the spiritual underworld. We will get on a horse drawn cart, which take us 5 miles into the jungle to visit and swim into the beautiful and clear cenotes.

Day 6: Celestun National Park Celestun is home to the largest population of Pink Flamingos on the American continent. To visit them, we take a boat tour. We also learn about the importance of mangroves in the region. There is also time to take a swim. We return to the hotel late in the afternoon after lunch on the beach and the rest of the day is at leisure.

Day 7: Chichen Itza / Playa del Carmen We depart this morning for Cancun on the Caribbean Sea. This is Mexico's largest resort area, known as the "Mayan Riviera." En route we'll tour Chichen Itza with its magnificent architecture, including the imposing Castillo Pyramid. We also learn about the "hoop dreams" of the Mayas as we visit the ball courts and learn about the game of pok-ta-pok. Before arriving in Playa del Carmen we take time to visit Cenote Ik Kil , a beautiful subterranean pool under an arched limestone roof.

Day 8: Playa del Carmen We'll enjoy the natural wonders of this area today as we visit an eco-park, Xel Ha, a former Mayan town. Here, for an optional fee, we can snorkel or swim with dolphins! We can also choose to tube down a river, explore a Mayan cave, or just relax in this fabulous setting. Tonight we enjoy our last night in Mexico.

Day 9: Return Home We are transferred to the Cancun airport this morning and board our homebound flight. We return with last memories of exotic landscapes, ancient cultures, and a wealth of new friends! Adios Mexico!
